As the most experienced Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) in Lubbock, having attended over 1220 deliveries, she has been described as calming, reassuring, and confident. She is also a Certified Lactation Specialist who is passionate about natural health care.
“I am the wife and mother of four busy and resilient children; I enjoy being outside, listening to music, and sewing. My husband, as the business manager for Heartbeat Midwifery, has been a constant source of encouragement and support as we work together to empower and support the families in this community.
God gave me a passion when I was 19 to be a part of the miracle of new life. Over the years I have been blessed with opportunities to work with families across the US, and internationally in Asia and Africa.
I enjoy every phase of the childbearing year. It gives me deep satisfaction to provide families with a safe and professional environment where they can birth the way they want!

Kelly Dougherty
Student Midwife
I am a wife and a mother to two girls. I have always had an interest in pregnancy and birth, but that interest has grown into a passion through my experiences as a L&D nurse, birth doula, and a mother. I believe that women are capable of birthing their babies and am passionate about dispelling the myths and lies women have been taught about childbirth. I truly believe that God has led me to where I am today and am so blessed to be part of the Heartbeat team!
In my free time, I enjoy spending quality time with my husband and kids, riding around our small town on our golf cart, and experimenting with sourdough.
Ellie Edwards
Student Midwife
“Growing up in a big family is where my love for babies emanated, and my interest in pregnancy and birth came from living in an environment filled with all kinds of animals. After being able to witness multiple births of different animals growing up and helping with the delivery of breech quadruplet baby goats, I knew I wanted to be a part of this process for the rest of my life! I am amazed at the strength and awe-inspiring abilities God has gifted women. I cannot wait to be a part of this miracle of life and serve women through that time in their lives.”
Ellie likes to spend her free time hanging out with family, doing puzzles, and spending time outside.
Kimmi Thompson
Birth Assistant
My husband and I have been married for six years and we have three sweet little kids. My hobbies include caring for houseplants and reading books. I started out my nursing career in 2016 as a postpartum nurse, working specifically in the newborn nursery. After three years, I became a lactation consultant and moved into the lactation department. In June of 2022, I passed the exam to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. I am passionate about educating and supporting women through pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. It’s an honor to help mommas through such a precious time.
Kimmi is thrilled to be a part of the Heartbeat team and to work alongside skilled midwives.
Our office staff ensure that the birth team is able to do their job. Heartbeat would not function smoothly day-to-day without the tireless hours and ingenuity they put into the Birth Center.
Mirth Smith
Receptionist
Hi! My name is Mirth and I’m the receptionist here at Heartbeat. I have a passion for learning and I think that birth is one of the most fascinating things to learn about. Working at Heartbeat feels like taking care of a second home. Getting to know each patient as they come in for appointments and then their newborn after birth is my favorite part of being here. I can’t wait for the day I become a mom myself! When I’m not at work I love to be outside in the sun, listen to music, and go thrifting.
Sofi Reyes
Receptionist

I look forward to contributing to our shared mission and celebrating the amazing journey of bringing new life into the world. Outside of Heartbeat , I spend my time attending classes as a senior at Texas Tech University! I study microbiology, chemistry, and health and I have a huge passion for genetics and overall well being of others!
